Umbrella Cockatoos are so named due to their crest. When fully erect, the crest resembles an upside down umbrella.
Highly intelligent birds, cockatoos are social by nature and naturally acrobatic – having two toes that face forward and two back. Their calls are very loud and can be heard up to three miles away. They have black feet, a grey beak and the underside of their wing is bright yellow. They grow to about 46cm (18 inches) long.
Cockatoos are found in tropical forests on the Indonesian Islands of the Australasian archipelago (the islands surrounding the mainland). In the wild, numbers of the Umbrella Cockatoo have reduced due to habitat loss (deforestation) and illegal trapping for the pet trade.
A mating pair of cockatoos will bond for life. The female lays an average of two eggs at a time and both the male and female take their turn at keeping the eggs warm before they hatch.
