Chicken breeds today come in all shapes and sizes and there are over 200 different breeds - all of which serve different purposes.
Domesticated by the people of Asia thousands of years ago, the chicken is a descendant of the red jungle fowl (Gallus gallus) from India.
Originally used for meat and egg production, this versatile bird is now also bred as a show bird and the hobby is very popular across the globe. Unfortunately, in some parts of the world they are bred for fighting. Thankfully, this particular activity has long been banned in the UK.
