The chimpanzee originates from western and central equatorial Africa (Senegal and Tanzania). They prefer woodland and mixed savannah with fruit-bearing trees. Chimps are omnivores. They eat fruit, seeds, leaves, bark, honey, insects and occasionally they will also hunt and kill small mammals. They are diurnal creatures, building nests each day to sleep in at night.
Chimps' arms are 50% longer than their bodies. They can walk upright but generally use one arm to lean on (like a tripod). Chimps have a hairless face which is pink when young and slowly darkens into adulthood. Their hair is black, although a short white beard is common in adults of both sexes. Males can reach over 5’6” (1.65 metres) in height and weigh up to 176 pounds. They have no tail.
The chimp is a sociable animal that lives in groups of anywhere between 15 and 120. These large packs are divided loosely into sub-groups. Each smaller social group spends a lot of time grooming one another and this strengthens their bond. Chimps communicate both vocally and with facial expressions and gestures.
