Our wide range of talks and workshops are curriculum-linked and suit ages from early years to college levels. Enjoy an exciting and educational visit, coming face-to-face with exotic animals and artefacts in our Education Centre.
We offer three types of activity for visiting schools: guided tours of the zoo or theme park, workshops led by our team of qualified education staff, and Meet a Creature sessions. How you divide your day between these activities is entirely up to you!
With the many recent changes to the National Curriculum, please get in touch if you do not see an activity relevant to your year group.
Guided Zoo Tours
Allow your imagination to run wild as our animals are introduced to your class by an experienced zoo educator. Find out all about the fantastic range of animals we have here at the zoo, from the majestic roar of the lion in Africa, to the energetic swimming and leaping of the penguins in South America. Having your very own private tour guide ensures you get the most out of your visit to the zoo.
A 1 hour tours cover about half of the animals within the zoo and is an ideal length for the concentration span of most groups. This allows you to explore the rest of the zoo at your own pace. See below for the range of topics that we cover at primary and secondary levels, though feel free to contact us if you have any specific requirements!
We offer a wide range of exciting interactive workshops in our Education Centre covering many areas of the school curriculum. The whole class can get involved with hands-on activities led by our team of qualified educators.
Meet A Creature
A real hands-on experience! Your group will have the chance to get up close and personal with some of our animals, including reptiles, mammals and invertebrates. This is a great choice if you have limited time available or are just coming for a fun day out! If you do have a particular topic in mind, many of our workshops also include live animal(s). Sessions last around 30 minutes and are suitable for all ages.
Free time can be an important part of any school trip! You will have full access to our zoo, set in over 50 acres of beautiful Yorkshire countryside. Pick up a zoo trail worksheet from the Education Centre and spend some time exploring, or blow off some steam in our Children's Planet active playground. Our Bird and Sea Lion shows, running every weekday during high season, offer a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the welfare and behaviour of our animals, as do our free Keeper Talks. Although these activities do not run during the winter period, we can instead offer your class the chance to meet our California sea lions up close. Please note that as this is animal- and staff-dependent, it must be booked in advance.
We also offer:
- Indoor and outdoor lunch space (indoor space guaranteed only during low season)
- Access to our lemur, lorikeet and wallaby walkthrough exhibits
- Pre-made goody bags and access to the gift shop
Your visit is covered by our public liability insurance (details available on request), and risk assessments are available for all of our activities. If you'd prefer to produce your own risk assessments, we offer a free pre-visit for up to two teachers per school.
Zoo-only (available all year round):
£7.50 per student, with one free supervisor per 5 primary-level or 10 secondary-level students. This includes free educational activities of your choice with our award-winning team, as well as full access to the zoo.
Theme park and zoo (available late March to November):
Standard school entry prices apply (please see our ticket prices page for details) and include access to both the zoo and the theme park.
Are you a home educator?
