Our wide range of talks and workshops are curriculum-linked and suit ages from early years to college levels. Enjoy an exciting and educational visit, coming face-to-face with exotic animals and artefacts in our Education Centre.
We offer three types of activity for visiting schools: guided tours of the zoo, workshops led by our team of qualified education staff, and meet a creature sessions. How you divide your day between these activities is entirely up to you!
Guided Zoo Tours
Allow your imagination to run wild as our animals are introduced to your class by an experienced zoo educator. Find out all about the fantastic range of animals we have here at the zoo, from the majestic roar of the lion in Africa, to the energetic swimming and leaping of the penguins in South America. Having your very own private tour guide ensures you get the most out of your visit to the zoo.
A 2-hour tour is recommended to cover the whole zoo, but shorter tours are available to suit different age groups or schedules. See below for the range of topics that we cover at primary and secondary levels, though feel free to contact us if you have any specific requirements!
We offer a wide range of exciting interactive workshops in our Education Centre covering many areas of the school curriculum. The whole class can get involved with hands-on activities led by our team of qualified educators.
Meet A Creature
A real hands-on experience! Your group will have the chance to get up close and personal with some of our animals, including reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. This is a great choice if you have limited time available or are just coming for a fun day out! If you do have a particular topic in mind, many of our workshops also include live animals.
Sessions last around 30 minutes. We also offer extended sessions of 45 minutes to 1 hour which include artefacts such as skins, horns and bones.
Free time can be an important part of any school trip! You will have full access to our zoo, set in over 50 acres of beautiful Yorkshire countryside. Pick up a zoo trail worksheet from the Education Centre and spend some time exploring, or blow off some steam in our Children's Planet active playground. Our Bird and Sea Lion shows, running every weekday during high season, offer a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the welfare and behaviour of our animals.
Health & Safety
Your visit is covered by our public liability insurance (details available on request), and risk assessments are available for all of our activities. If you'd prefer to produce your own risk assessments, we offer a free pre-visit for up to two teachers per school.
