The Giant African Land Snail is one of the largest terrestrial gastropods.
They have light to dark brown shells, often with stripes of a different shade of brown on them. They have four tentacles on the face, two long ones hold the eyes and the smaller two are used for smelling. The whole body of the snail is called a foot.
They are a hermaphrodite species, because each individual is equipped with both sets of reproductive organs.
African land snails are incredibly adaptable, they can thrive in a wide range of habitats and eat an even wider range of plants, including farmers’ crops, putting them in conflict with rural affairs.
Because of this ability to adapt, they are considered to be one of the most invasive species in the world, managing to create thriving populations on almost every continent. Some countries have even made it illegal to keep this species as a pet to avoid having an outbreak!
